Changing Views of Northern Ireland’s Volcanic Landscapes

Environment & Nature
Changing Views of Northern Ireland’s Volcanic Landscapes
Event Details

At the Giant’s Causeway the remarkable columnar-jointed volcanic lavas descend from high in the cliffs down to sea level. Visited by millions of people, and thousands of geologists, over the last two centuries, surely there is nothing new to be discovered there? But a theory that has held sway for more than 80 years has now been debunked, based on evidence that was hiding in plain sight all along. This talk will provide an overview of Northern Ireland’s most recent volcanic episode, 60 million years ago, and describe the evidence that has demanded a rethink on the formation of the Giant’s Causeway.
