Thanks to its underlying geology, the Dungannon and Coalisland area is home to large number of coal mine workings, with over 600 known mine shafts. Join the Geological Survey of Northern Ireland (GSNI) to find out more about this fascinating part of Dungannon and Coalisland’s industrial heritage. Discover the geological history of the area and just why the underlying geology was particularly challenging for mining. You’ll also get the opportunity to learn about the extensive work the GSNI does to monitor the abandoned mines in the area, minimising risk and ensuring public safety.
